Would be nice if EVERY Catholic Church offered the same prayer towards that today.
We have a crisis in the Church and several bishops have had the thought about restoring the praying of the St. Michael’s prayer after all Masses . . . to protect the faithful against evil.
Naturally, I love the idea but why was the practice ever stopped. I’ve heard/read about parishes over the years who tried to reinstate the St. Michael’s prayer and it just didn’t fly with the pastors. You have to wonder why. It takes all of two minutes to pray and is a bit of insurance to take with you after Mass having asked for St. Michael’s protection against Satan.
Just looking at the social evolution of the world since the 1960’s, probably around the time St. Michael was put on the shelf, we have had a multitude of new sins join the ranks of temptation, mass murder of the unborn, laxness in catechesis, immodesty, bad language and more. Would there have been less of this if St. Michael was still a major part of our day? Would we be losing our young people to liberal ideologies?
The Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel deals directly with the ongoing battle between good and evil. Pope Leo XIII wrote and presented in the 19th century. I would hope that many of us still privately know and offer this prayer. How wonderful, however, if EVERY one of the Catholic clergy reinstated the recitation of this prayer for St. Michael’s intercession. From my readings, the current world is in pretty bad shape but not even approaching the End Times yet meaning things are not as bad as they will be the closer we get to that era. Why not get more power into our ‘game’ and get St. Michael more firmly into our prayers and intercessions before it is too late.
Here’s the Prayer to St. Michael:
St. Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly hosts,
by the power of God, thrust into Hell Satan,
and all the evil spirits,
who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Exorcisms are on the rise and exorcists are not as plentiful as we may need. When you see there is a battleground assembling, shouldn’t we do something? Christians/Catholics are the most persecuted in the world which tells you which way the battle is going right now.
Original Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel
“O Glorious Prince of the heavenly host, St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in the battle and in the terrible warfare that we are waging against the principalities and powers, against the rulers of this world of darkness, against the evil spirits. Come to the aid of man, whom Almighty God created immortal, made in His own image and likeness, and redeemed at a great price from the tyranny of Satan.
“Fight this day the battle of the Lord, together with the holy angels, as already thou hast fought the leader of the proud angels, Lucifer, and his apostate host, who were powerless to resist thee, nor was there place for them any longer in Heaven. That cruel, ancient serpent, who is called the devil or Satan who seduces the whole world, was cast into the abyss with his angels. Behold, this primeval enemy and slayer of men has taken courage. Transformed into an angel of light, he wanders about with all the multitude of wicked spirits, invading the earth in order to blot out the name of God and of His Christ, to seize upon, slay and cast into eternal perdition souls destined for the crown of eternal glory. This wicked dragon pours out, as a most impure flood, the venom of his malice on men of depraved mind and corrupt heart, the spirit of lying, of impiety, of blasphemy, and the pestilent breath of impurity, and of every vice and iniquity.
“These most crafty enemies have filled and inebriated with gall and bitterness the Church, the spouse of the immaculate Lamb, and have laid impious hands on her most sacred possessions. In the Holy Place itself, where the See of Holy Peter and the Chair of Truth has been set up as the light of the world, they have raised the throne of their abominable impiety, with the iniquitous design that when the Pastor has been struck, the sheep may be scattered.
“Arise then, O invincible Prince, bring help against the attacks of the lost spirits to the people of God, and give them the victory. They venerate thee as their protector and patron; in thee holy Church glories as her defense against the malicious power of hell; to thee has God entrusted the souls of men to be established in heavenly beatitude. Oh, pray to the God of peace that He may put Satan under our feet, so far conquered that he may no longer be able to hold men in captivity and harm the Church. Offer our prayers in the sight of the Most High, so that they may quickly find mercy in the sight of the Lord; and vanquishing the dragon, the ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, do thou again make him captive in the abyss, that he may no longer seduce the nations. Amen.
V. Behold the Cross of the Lord; be scattered ye hostile powers.
R. The Lion of the tribe of Judah has conquered, the root of David.
V. Let Thy mercies be upon us, O Lord.
R. As we have hoped in Thee.
V. O Lord, hear my prayer.
R. And let my cry come unto Thee.
Let us pray.
O God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we call upon Thy holy Name, and as supplicants, we implore Thy clemency, that by the intercession of Mary, ever Virgin Immaculate and our Mother, and of the glorious St. Michael the Archangel, Thou wouldst deign to help us against Satan and all the other unclean spirits who wander about the world for the injury of the human race and the ruin of souls. Amen.”

Let’s face it, the world isn’t getting better any time soon and if you have to wonder why, perhaps, you have forgotten to employ your God-given gift of prayer. Just a look around is evidence enough that prayer isn’t always foremost in many minds. The disrespect of each other, the law breakers, the selfie world of me, me, me, the attack on family and life, Christian persecution in our own country, the government intervention to the demise of personal liberty . . . We truly have an abundance of evidence pointing to a lack of God and prayer in our lives yet many are complacent and think they can’t make a difference. BUT, have you tried? Do you wonder from where your blessing in life have come? I often hear people complain about elected officials and even their pastors and bishops but they never consider that perhaps we get what we pray for . . . or neglect to add as an intercession to our prayers.
I just ran across two prayers to help stop the influx of terrorism. For those that believe, can you even begin to imagine the strength and power of millions praying for peace daily? Try it. Everything starts with one person beginning.
You can help stop terrorism from happening again.
HOW? By praying two simple prayers for the rest of your life. First, our loving God has given every person a guardian angel to help protect them and guide them. Ask your angel to go before the Throne of Almighty God and petition Him to send legions of Holy Angels to terrorists around the world and drive Satan and his fallen angels away from them.
SECOND, pray to God for the softening of hearts and conversion of souls of terrorists throughout the world. Pray for justice. If millions of people pray these two simple prayers daily, our world will change for the better.
Prayer One: My Guardian Angel, I send you to the throne of Almighty God. Please petition Him to send legions of Angels to terrorists throughout the world to drive Satan and his fallen angels out of their lives forever. Thank you my Holy Protector. Amen
Prayer Two: All loving God,I pray for the terrorists throughout the world. May they have a softening of their hearts and conversion of their soul to You. I pray for justice in myself and in all mankind. Thank you dear God. Amen
And, personally, I’d add a daily prayer to St. Michael to the program.
The prayer of St. Michael was a wonderful end to the Low Mass Liturgy prior to the liturgical changes brought about in 1965. The prayer was written by Pope Leo XIII after he is alleged to have received a prophetic vision. The common version of this vision is that Pope Leo XIII witnessed a debate between Our Blessed Lord and Satan. According to the story, during the debate/conversation, the Devil was granted somewhat free reign for a period of 100 years. The most repeated account of the events behind the prophecy of Pope Leo was as follows:
On October 13, 1884, after Pope Leo XIII had finished celebrating Mass in the Vatican Chapel, attended by a few Cardinals and members of the Vatican staff, he suddenly stopped at the foot of the altar. He stood there for about 10 minutes, as if in a trance, his face ashen white. Then, going immediately from the Chapel to his office, he composed the prayer to St. Michael, with instructions it be said after all Low Masses everywhere. When asked what had happened, he explained that, as he was about to leave the foot of the altar, he suddenly heard voices – two voices, one kind and gentle, the other guttural and harsh. They seemed to come from near the tabernacle. As he listened, he heard the following conversation:
The guttural voice, the voice of Satan in his pride, boasting to Our Lord: “I can destroy your Church”
The gentle voice of Our Lord: “You can? Then go ahead and do so.”
Satan: “To do so, I need more time and more power.”
Our Lord: “How much time? How much power?
Satan: “75 to 100 years, and a greater power over those who will give themselves over to my service.”
Our Lord: “You have the time, you will have the power. Do with them what you will.”
The first, known version of the story was said to have been in print around 1933 in a German newspaper. It may have come into more public knowledge having been spread by word among the Vatican staff and other religious who were with the Pope at this time. It has not been definitely ascertained how it could be traced back to the original source.
A German writer, Fr. Bers, researched the origins of the prophecy in 1933. Failing to find solid evidence of the original source, he felt the prophecy could be an invention. Yet the story continued.
Thirteen years later, after Fr. Bers failed attempt, Fr. Domenico Pechenio, a priest who worked at the Vatican offices during the time of Pope Leo XIII, came forward with a first-hand accounting of the events.
I do not remember the exact year. One morning the great Pope Leo XIII had celebrated a Mass and, as usual, was attending a Mass of thanksgiving. Suddenly, we saw him raise his head and stare at something above the celebrant’s head. He was staring motionlessly, without batting an eye. His expression was one of horror and awe; the color and look on his face changing rapidly. Something unusual and grave was happening in him.
“Finally, as though coming to his senses, he lightly but firmly tapped his hand and rose to his feet. He headed for his private office. His retinue followed anxiously and solicitously, whispering: ‘Holy Father, are you not feeling well? Do you need anything?’ He answered: ‘Nothing, nothing.’ About half an hour later, he called for the Secretary of the Congregation of Rites and, handing him a sheet of paper, requested that it be printed and sent to all the ordinaries around the world. What was that paper? It was the prayer that we recite with the people at the end of every Mass. It is the plea to Mary and the passionate request to the Prince of the heavenly host, (St. Michael: Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle) beseeching God to send Satan back to hell.”
(Fr. Domenico Pechenino, quoted in the 1955 Roman journal Ephemerides Liturgicae V. LXIX, pp 54–60)
The St. Michael Prayer
Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle;
be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray:
and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host,
by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits
who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
The world seems to be a culminating into a lot of the prophecy associated with that talk between God and Satan. A look around tells anyone with common sense and a sense of the wave of terror and evil flowing quickly into the world should give us a sense of warning. However, we have been told again and again, that only God knows the time and the place for the end of time, the Second Coming, the destruction of the world, etc. As bad as things are, it could be a very grave and serious warning to each of us to realize that our personal ‘end of the world’ would more likely come before the End of the World. Probably not a good idea to put off more serious prayers and acts of reparation until we get a more definite state from Heaven.
It is also sad that the changes in 1965 removed the Saint Michael’s Prayer from the completion of the Low Mass, too. Why would such a powerful prayer be removed from daily, public prayer? When I noticed the upcoming date, this morning, it reminded me of the time frame God allowed Satan and how much bad and evil has been accomplished in the last century.
